Fiancé(e)/Proposed Civil Partner Visa
A Fiancé(e) Visa is for a different sex relationship and a Proposed Civil Partner Visa is for a same-sex relationship. These applications can only be made from outside the UK.
There are similar financial, accommodation and English language requirements to the other partner visa categories, but the basis of leave is different. Leave is granted for only six months, and the applicant is expected to get married/undergo a civil partnership in that time. If they do not do so they must provide good reasons, and if the reasons are not accepted, they might lose their immigration status.
These visas do not permit work or study.
If the applicant gets married/undergoes a civil partnership within the six months they can then apply to the Home Office for leave to remain as a Spouse or Civil Partner, for which they would have to meet the standard requirements. They do not have to leave the UK to submit this application. If the application is successful, they will be granted 30 months’ leave as normal and they will acquire the right to work or study.
The five years/ten-year requirements for settlement can only be satisfied by Spouse or Civil Partner leave – time spent on a Fiancé(e)/Proposed Civil Partner Visa does not qualify towards that period.
